Google ready to roll out Kansas City FTTH network

Not quite a year after announcing that Kansas City, KS, would host its first fiber to the home (FTTH) test bed (see "Google names Kansas City, KS, FTTH test bed city"), Google has announced that it is ready to begin installing fiber. The company announced the milestone yesterday on its Google Fiber Blog.

Sunrise Telecom adds OTDR and fiber inspection to RxT

In response to the increasing use of fiber optics in wireless backhaul networks as well as on cell towers themselves, Sunrise Telecom Inc. (OTC:SRTI) has unveiled the RxT-4000 Fiber Optics Toolkit (FOT) and the FiberScope inspection option to the company’s RxT Smart Productivity Test Platform. Sunrise Telecom also expects to the new modules to find use in networks using fiber to provide business and cloud-based services. 

Alcatel-Lucent extends reach of 100-Gbps transmission

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) has unveiled a new 100-Gbps line card for its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) designed to offer extended reach and better spectral efficiency. The new 100G eXtended Reach (XR) card, which should be available by the end of the month, will be offered as an alternative to Alcatel-Lucent’s existing 100-Gbps capabilities, rather than a replacement.

Charter increases Internet service speeds

Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHTR) says it will increase the speed of its Internet service offerings. In areas where it has deployed DOCSIS 3.0, the increases include 100 Mbps downstream for its premium service.

PT Telekom upgrades undersea cable system to 40 Gbps

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom), the largest telecom operator in Indonesia, has upgraded its 354-km JaSuKa undersea cable between Dumai and Dangas. The upgrade adds 40-Gbps per channel to existing hardware using Nokia Siemens Networks technology. Four channels currently have the 40-Gbps capabilities.

Alcatel-Lucent, France Telecom take Paris-London link

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has been chosen by France Telecom-Orange to increase the capacity of its fiber-optic network linking Paris and London. After a field trial carried out in the autumn, a first 100-Gbps connection was put into operation at the end of last November and a second connection will be available by the end of December.
