South Slope deploys BTI Systems Dynamic Optical Layer technology

BTI Systems says that South Slope Cooperative Communications, the largest rural independent operating company (IOC) in Iowa, has replaced its existing three-vendor SONET, DWDM, and Ethernet infrastructure with its equipment. South Slope has integrated BTI’s Dynamic Optical Layer, SLA Portal, and mobile backhaul offerings, according to the systems vendor.

Second-order nonlinearity paves way to new silicon devices

A consortium of researchers in Italy has observed second harmonic generation in a silicon waveguide – the first time this effect has been seen in a silicon waveguide, they say. This is an important step towards making integrated silicon devices in the mid- and far-infrared region of the spectrum, as well as extremely fast optical modulators and switches.

Argentina’s Cablevision selects 100G platform

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it has deployed the first 100G-capable cable-TV network in South America. Cablevision Argentina has selected the vendor’s 100-Gbps coherent optical networking technology to increase performance and meet growing bandwidth demands driven by video streaming, Web applications, file sharing, and high-definition movies.
 

FTTH cable focus of VolkerWessels Telecom contract with Prysmian Group

VolkerWessels Telecom, the telecoms division of Dutch construction company VolkerWessels, has choosen the Prysmian Group to supply FTTH cable for 2012 deployments. Draka will execute the contract, which the Prysmian Group says is the first Dutch multi-city agreement of its kind.

PT Telekom upgrades undersea cable system to 40 Gbps with Nokia Siemens Networks

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (PT Telkom), the largest telecom operator in Indonesia, has upgraded its 354-km JaSuKa undersea cable between Dumai and Dangas. The upgrade adds 40-Gbps per channel to existing hardware using Nokia Siemens Networks technology. Four channels currently have the 40-Gbps capabilities.
