Berkeley Lab and Internet2 to build 100-Gbps prototype network
August 25, 2011The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and Internet2 have entered into an agreement to build for the Department of Energy an advanced scientific network, intended to accelerate U.S. competitiveness in science and technology.
SURFnet taps Ciena for Carrier Ethernet
August 25, 2011Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ:CIEN) and SURFnet, which oversees the national research and education network of the Netherlands, will collaborate on SURFnet7, an optical network upgrade that will add enhanced Ethernet capabilities to the research network. Ciena will supply both Carrier Ethernet switches and its OneControl Unified Management System as part of the upgrade.
Alcatel-Lucent 1830 Photonic Service Switch
August 25, 2011Hong Kong communications service provider New World Telecom will deploy systems from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE:ALU) that will enable it to support 10-, 40-, and 100-Gbps traffic on the same fiber pair. Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch will be the lynchpin of the new 100-Gbps optical network capabilities.
TW1 Middle Eastern undersea fiber-optic cable system
August 25, 2011Pakistani private submarine fiber optic cable operator Transworld Associates (Pvt.) Ltd. and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity, say they will upgrade the TW1 undersea cable system that connects Pakistan, the UAE, and Oman. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
Romanian Educational Network chooses Ciena, Felix Telecom
August 24, 2011The Romanian Educational Network (RoEduNet) has upgraded the Ciena (NASDAQ:CIEN) 6500 Packet-Optical Platforms and Common Photonic Layer systems in its fiber-optic network to increase capacity to accommodate 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) traffic. Ciena will deploy the upgrade with its BizConnect partner Felix Telecom.
