Panelists in a Lightwave webcast July 14 agreed that the advent of comparatively economical 100-Gbps technology will affect the demand for 40-Gbps in carrier optical networks. However, they also agreed that it would be two years – at least – before such 100G systems are available. Given carrier capital expenditure constraints, the intervening two or more years should provide plenty of opportunity for 40-Gbps sales, they concluded.

Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) says it has been selected by Rotterdam-based game server provider Interactive 3D B.V. (i3D.net) to provide high-speed IP (HSIP) services to support the company's network scalability and connectivity needs, as well as wavelength transport services out of Level 3's Rotterdam point-of-presence. This allows Interactive 3D B.V. to peer in multiple locations.

Pacific Fibre and TE SubCom, a TE Connectivity Ltd. company (NYSE: TEL), announced the signing of a supply contract for the Pacific Fibre undersea cable system. The system boasts a higher cross sectional capacity than any other trans-Pacific cable and will stretch 12,750km.
