Cyan has unveiled a variant of its new Service Level Aware Networks (SLAN) portfolio aimed at wireless backhaul applications. Dubbed TowerAware, the offering combines SLAN’s Cy360 planning, management and verification software and SaaS elements with new outside plant friendly hardware. The offering is already in the field and backhauling traffic from such wireless services providers as AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon, according to Frank Wiener, Cyan’s vice president of marketing and international sales.

SK Telecom, a mobile operator in Korea will soon quadruple its network capacity to 40 gigabits per second (40Gbps) transmission, and prepare its network for transition to 100G capacity in the future.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MII) has granted a Network Access License to Swedish optical transport systems developer Transmode for its TM-Series optical networking equipment. The license clears the way for Transmode products to be used in China's public network.

Xena Networks, a Denmark-based developer of Gigabit Ethernet test systems, announced its first tri-speed 10-40-100 Gbps Ethernet Test Module, targeted at carriers, enterprises, and research departments ramping up to deploy 100 Gigabit Ethernet following the ratification of the standard by the IEEE and ITU-T.

MRV Communications (OTC Pink Sheets: MRVC) has announced its intentions to enter the 100-Gbps optical equipment market. Unlike most other companies with similar plans, MRV wants to target metro and regional applications first, rather than the long-haul and core networks. To prove its sincerity – as well as how close it is to having a 100-Gbps product – it announced a 100-Gbps partnership with AMS-IX, an Internet exchange in Amsterdam that has made no secret of its desire for 100-Gbps network capabilities.
