Deutsche Telekom used the CeBIT show in Hanover, Germany, as a platform to discuss its plans for next-generation fiber to the home (FTTH) and LTE wireless network expansions. As many as 160,000 households in 10 German cities will be connected via FTTH this year, Deutsche Telekom says. The German carrier asserts its network upgrades will enable downstream speeds of 1 Gbps and upstream speeds of 500 Mbps.

Midcontinent Communications, in response to a bandwidth surge in the Upper Midwest, is ramping up its fiber to the premises (FTTP) offerings with Clearfield Inc.’s scalable fiber systems, which will service 250,000 customers in North and South Dakota and parts of Minnesota.

Tbaytel, a telecommunications systems provider in Northern Ontario, Canada, has selected the Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Node (ESAN) from Calix Inc. for its launch of advanced IPTV services. Tbaytel will leverage VDSL2 and Active Ethernet fiber access technology to bring Microsoft Mediaroom-powered video services to residential subscribers in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

JDSU has unveiled a FiberComplete version of the T-BERD/MTS-4000 that combines the capabilities of 10 instruments into one. The new offering is designed to enable technicians to use a single fiber-optic test instrument to install, turn up, and maintain metro and access point-to-point or point-to-multipoint (PON) networks.

Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc. took part in the first interoperability test of DPoETM (DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON) 1.0. Sumitomo Electric Networks brought DPoETM System and DPoETM ONU into the interoperability test, and completed all tests.
