Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE:ALU) and Mobily, the brand name of a Saudi Arabian mobile operator Etihad Etisalat, say they have successfully completed a trial of 100-Gbps transmission technology using live traffic in the Saudi city of Jeddah.

Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) says that US Signal will deploy the network equipment provider’s ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers as part of a fiber-optic network upgrade. The upgrade aims to support virtual Carrier Ethernet services at rates up to 100 Gbps and new managed data center services for enterprise customers. IPv6 support is also a key element, Cisco asserts.

AFL is supplying fiber optic cable and equipment to Nigeria’s first open access fiber-optic backbone network. Nigeria’s National Broadband Carrier Network Project includes 14,000 km of fiber-optic network infrastructure linked through regional network owners to enable advanced communications to all regions of the country.

Hibernia Media, a subsidiary of transatlantic bandwidth provider Hibernia Atlantic that supplies managed video transport, has installed optical transport equipment from Ekinops to carry uncompressed, high-definition video signals at its New York City Content Exchange Center (CEC).

Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR) says that iiNet (ASX: IIN), an Australian DSL Internet service provider, began in May a two-month trial of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) router interface cards in its backbone network. The cards are installed in Juniper Networks T1600 Core Routers iiNet installed in its backbone optical network at the beginning of this year.

Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ:CIEN) and SURFnet, which oversees the national research and education network of the Netherlands, will collaborate on SURFnet7, an optical network upgrade that will add enhanced Ethernet capabilities to the research network. Ciena will supply both Carrier Ethernet switches and its OneControl Unified Management System as part of the upgrade.
