Despite near term uncertainty in the market, the optical communications industry is well positioned for growth in 2011-2015, according to the latest forecast report released by LightCounting. Very strong demand for optical components and modules used in datacom and telecom networks is an early indication of the industry-wide recovery. Latest data on Q4 2010 sales reported by several suppliers exceeded our previous estimates. Sales of optical transceivers increased by 35% in 2010, while such a high growth rate is not sustainable, LightCounting forecasts that sales of optical transceivers will increase by 10% in 2011, exceeding $3 billion.

Despite modest growth in sales of optical networking equipment last year, the industry is well positioned for growth in 2011-2015, according to the latest forecast report released by LightCounting. Very strong demand for optical components and modules used in datacom and telecom networks is an early indication of the industry-wide recovery. Sales of optical transceivers and WSS modules increased by 30% in 2010, rebounding from 11% decline posted in 2009.

Global sales of optical interface modules used in telecom and datacom networks exceeded $2.5 billion in 2010, increasing by 30% from the year before. The growth was driven by sales of 10 Gbps SFP+ and DWDM modules, including 40 Gbps and even 100 Gbps products. Sales of WSS modules used in ROADMs and tunable lasers were also strong in 2010, growing at 34% and 14%, respectively. It was a slow year, however, for active optical cables, as demand for these modules is closely tied to individual installations of supercomputer clusters and this market remains volatile.

The 10GbE (10Gb Ethernet) market is finally taking off with shipments of SFP+ optical transceivers driving early growth. Several important trends are driving this market through 2014, described in "10GBASE-T to Dominate 10 Gigabit Ethernet, Eventually," the latest report from LightCounting,LLC, the premier transceiver and copper interconnect market research company.

Going forward, SFP+ will be the dominant optical interface. 10GbE SFP+ port shipments with a reach of less than 300 meters are used in server to switch and some switch-to-switch applications. Shipments have tripled over the past three quarters, and LightCounting expects the high-growth trend to continue.
