US Signal targets Carrier Ethernet, managed data center services with Cisco ASR 9000 deployment

Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) says that US Signal will deploy the network equipment provider’s ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers as part of a fiber-optic network upgrade. The upgrade aims to support virtual Carrier Ethernet services at rates up to 100 Gbps and new managed data center services for enterprise customers. IPv6 support is also a key element, Cisco asserts.

The ASR 9000 itself was the subject of a recent upgrade as well (see "Cisco upgrades ASR 9000 to 96 Tbps, unveils nV network virtualization capability").

US Signal operates a fiber-optic network that stretches throughout the U.S. Midwest and includes metro rings in 23 markets. The network already incorporates Cisco DWDM platforms.

The network service provider’s new managed data center offering will leverage dedicated resource pools designed to rapidly provision and host virtual private servers accessible through the upgraded US Signal network. Among other benefits, the new resources will enable US Signal to offer customers the ability to build virtual private cloud environments.
