A consortium of researchers in Italy has observed second harmonic generation in a silicon waveguide – the first time this effect has been seen in a silicon waveguide, they say. This is an important step towards making integrated silicon devices in the mid- and far-infrared region of the spectrum, as well as extremely fast optical modulators and switches.

Southern Photonics of New Zealand now offers a new alternative to current optical modulation analysis techniques. The company says its IQScope, when paired with equivalent-time sampling oscilloscopes, can perform optical complex modulation analysis over a wide range of modulation formats at data rates as high as 800 Gbps.

Researchers at OFS Technologies Somerset, NJ, say they have developed a precise and efficient way to construct microresonators by making nanoscale changes to the diameter of standard optical fiber. The researchers say this is “an essential step toward designing a practical optical computer.”

Now the researchers say they have designed a new kind of optical memory that could be commercially available in the next few years. "We can faithfully reproduce these resonators. There’s a real, robust way of fabricating these, and this is the first paper that actually shows that," said Misha Sumetsky, a researcher at OFS Laboratories and lead author on the study.
