If successful, the optical RAMs will provide several benefits, RAMPLAS participants believe:memory access times 30X less than state-of-the-art SRAM cache and three orders of magnitude lower than DRAM modules ;reduction of energy consumption to levels around 15 mW/Gbps ;confirm the viability of wavelengths as a means to interconnect cache units and different memory hierarchical layers.

It isn’t taking long for NeoPhotonics Corp. (NYSE: NPTN) to leverage the assets it recently acquired when it bought Santur Corp. (see “NeoPhotonics agrees to acquire Santur”). NeoPhotonics says it is in the process of doubling production capacity for the narrow-linewidth tunable lasers it received in the deal.

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) says it will launch a program to develop specifications for what it calls an Integrated Dual Polarization Quadrature Modulated Transmitter Assembly (ITXA). The ITXA effort aims to define a common electrical interface that allows the inclusion of other modulator technology that could enable lower cost and smaller transmitter assembly size.

Telephones are connected to the telephone exchange via a local loop, which is a physical pair of wires. Prior to the digital age, the use of the local loop for anything other than the transmission of speech, encompassing an audio frequency range of 300 to 3400 Hertz (voiceband or commercial bandwidth) was not considered.

GigOptix, Inc. (OTCQX:GGOX) says it has started high-volume production of 14G VCSEL drivers and receiver amplifier arrays for short-reach parallel optical interconnects. The firm says the products are now shipping to Tier 1 customers making active optical cables (AOCs) for the datacom, avionics, and consumer markets.
