Discovery Semiconductor is touting the use of its Highly Linear Photodiode (HLPD) technology to create optoelectronic clocks with low phase noise. Such clocks could enable ultra-fast analog-to-digital converters, among other advances, according to sources at the company.

Google spent much of 2010 beating the drums for an alternative to the IEEE’s 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) 100GBase-LR4 specifications. Qualcomm Atheros Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc. (NASDAQ: QCOM) has announced the QCA8829, a 1-Gbps Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) chip, which is designed to support a variety of applications. In addition to EPON fiber to the home (FTTH) application, the chip will support North American cable operator broadband efforts and provisioning for smart grid applications over PON in China.
