VI Systems demos 12.5G VCSEL over 1 km of OM4 multimode fiber

September 17, 2011

VI Systems GmbH has demonstrated a fiber-optic link in which its 850-nm V30-850C1SM vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) transmitted 12.5 Gbps over 1 km on Draka’s MaxCap-OM4 (50/125 μm) multimode fiber. The Technical University of Berlin, Germany provided the test bed and scientific support for the measurements.

K-micro offers burst-mode CDR for XG-PON1 OLTs

September 17, 2011

Kawasaki Microelectronics America, Inc. (K-micro) has unveiled a burst-mode CDR SerDes PHY for XG-PON1 OLT applications. Available now in 65-nm and 40-nm process technologies for ASIC integration, the chip is designed to lock to upstream data bursts at 2.488 Gbps in less than 16 bits. K-micro says the CDR SerDes also can be configured to improve burst-mode lock time in GPON OLTs at 1.25 Gbps.

When will 100-Gbps DP-QPSK coherent modules be available?

September 16, 2011

The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) has received significant attention and praise for its efforts to develop an ecosystem of component and subsystem technology to support long-haul 100-Gbps DWDM applications using dual-polarization quadrature phase-shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulation paired with coherent detection on the receive end. The most significant benefits of the OIF endeavor were expected to accrue in the form of multisource agreement (MSA) standard optical modules that would speed 100-Gbps technology down the cost-reduction curve.
