Three of Cisco’s top engineers with a strong record in building some of the company’s most important products are in negotiations to create a new type of network switch for data centers, according to people with knowledge of the talks.

On May 21-23, 2012, Diversity Alliance for Science, Inc., a non-profit organization created to support, mentor, and develop minority-, woman-, veteran/service-disabled-, HUBZone-, and LGBT-owned, life sciences businesses, will host its fifth annual networking conference and EXPO event. The two-day event will be held at the Renaissance Newark Liberty Airport Hotel in Newark, N.J. and will feature senior government officials, top-level pharmaceutical executives, and CEOs of diverse scientific and clinical enterprises. In order to facilitate personal networking, relationship building, and to enable smaller diverse companies to have a higher profile, the conference limits participation to 350 attendees.

Clearfield, Inc (Nasdaq:CLFD) today announced that Broadband Stimulus awardee Vermont Telephone Company (VTel) has started deploying its FieldSmart fiber management platform to VTel's more than 15,000 customers throughout its service area in southern Vermont. VTel was awarded federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funding for its Wireless Open World (WOW) network to extend fiber to every home and business in the VTel service area and roll out 4G/LTE high speed, wireless broadband services throughout Vermont.

Chinese telecommunications provider ZTE held a field demonstration of an optical network capable of transmitting 1.7Tbps, the company announced today. The network used Wavelength Division Multiplexing to achieve the thousand-gigabit speeds, which separates data into different wavelengths and transmits those wavelengths over the same optical fiber. In ZTE's demonstration, the company used 8 different channels, each transmitting 216.4Gbps. The transmission was conducted in China over 1,087 miles, on a standard fiber-optic cable.
