In the computer storage field, a Fibre Channel switch is a network switch compatible with the Fibre Channel (FC) protocol. It allows the creation of a Fibre Channel fabric, that is currently the core component of most storage area networks (SAN). The fabric is a network of Fibre Channel devices which allows many-to-many communication, device name lookup, security, and redundancy. FC switches implement zoning, a mechanism that disables unwanted traffic between certain fabric nodes.

Switched fabric in Fibre Channel

In the Fibre Channel switched fabric topology (called FC-SW), devices are connected to each other through one or more Fibre Channel switches. This topology allows the connection of up to the theoretical maximum of 16 million devices, limited only by the available address space (224). Multiple switches in a fabric usually form a mesh network, with devices being on the "edges" ("leaves") of the mesh. While this topology has the best scalability properties of the three FC topologies, it is also the most expensive, the only one requiring a costly fibre channel switch.

Fabric Shortest Path First (FSPF) is a routing protocol used in Fibre Channel networks. It calculates the best path between switches, establishes routes across the fabric and calculates alternate routes in event of a failure or topology change. FSPF can guarantee in-sequence delivery of frames, even if the routing topology has changed during a failure, by enforcing a 'hold down' time before a new path is activated.

In storage networking, Fibre Channel zoning is the partitioning of a Fibre Channel fabric into smaller subsets to restrict interference, add security, and to simplify management. While a SAN makes available several virtual disks (LUNs), each system connected to the SAN should only be allowed access to a controlled subset of the LUNs. Zoning applies only to the switched fabric topology (FC-SW), it does not exist in simpler Fibre Channel topologies.
