Fiber Optic Wiki

Fiber optical Applications

July 15, 2011

In optical fibers, attenuation is the rate at which the signal light decreases in intensity. For this reason, glass fiber (which has a low attenuation) is used for long-distance fiber optic cables; plastic fiber has a higher attenuation and hence shorter range. There also exist optical attenuators which decrease the signal in a fiber optic cable intentionally.

About Fiber Optic Transceivers

July 15, 2011

Fiber optic transceivers include both a transmitter and a receiver in the same component. These are arranged in parallel so that they can operate independently of each other. Both the receiver and the transmitter have their own circuitry so that they can handle transmissions in both directions.

Dark soliton fiber lasers

July 14, 2011

In the non-mode locking regime, the first dark soliton fiber laser has been successfully achieved in an all-normal dispersion erbium-doped ?ber laser with a polarizer in cavity. Experimentally finding that apart from the bright pulse emission, under appropriate conditions the ?ber laser could also emit single or multiple dark pulses. Based on numerical simulations we interpret the dark pulse formation in the laser as a result of dark soliton shaping.

fiber disk lasers

July 14, 2011

Another type of fiber laser is the fiber disk laser. In such, the pump is not confined within the cladding of the fiber (as in the double-clad fiber), but pump light is delivered across the core multiple times because the core is coiled on itself like a rope. This configuration is suitable for power scaling in which many pump sources are used around the periphery of the coil.

Fiber-optic attenuator applications

July 14, 2011

Attenuators are commonly used in fiber optic communications, either to test power level margins by temporarily adding a calibrated amount of signal loss, or installed permanently to properly match transmitter and receiver levels.

Fixed fiber-optic attenuators

July 14, 2011

Fixed optical attenuators used in fiber optic systems may use a variety of principles for their functioning. Preferred attenuators use either doped fibers, or mis-aligned splices, since both of these are reliable and inexpensive. Inline style attenuators are incorporated into patch cables. The alternative build out style attenuator is a small male-female adapter that can be added on to other cables.
