A project to bring high-speed Internet access to 1,500 homes in Lac qui Parle County in western Minnesota was supposed to be well under way by now. It had federal approval and millions in federal stimulus dollars at the ready, but last spring the project hit a snag. Farmers Mutual, the local telephone company building the network, couldn't lay its hands on the necessary fiber optic cable.

The Pacific Telecom Council (PTC) has appointed Ahmed Mekky, board member and chief executive officer of Gulf Bridge International (GBI), an international private fiber optic cable company, to its 2012 Board of Governors.

Groups in five cities without FiOS service have asked the FCC not to approve the sale of cable wireless spectrum to Verizon and the associated deals that have cable operators marketing video service in Verizon Wireless' stores, or at least not okay it without conditions that spread the FiOS wealth.

Unite Private Networks (UPN),today announced the completion of a 66-mile fiber-optic wide-area-network built to serve the Houston County Board of Education (HCBE), and other local customers. In connecting the HCBE schools, the fiber network covers much of Warner Robins, Centerville and Perry, Georgia. UPN worked with Flint Energies to access utility rights-of-way for much of the network.
