MQW devices must be operated at high reverse bias fields to achieve good contrast ratios. In perfect quantum well material this is not a problem, but the presence of a defect in the semiconductor crystal can cause the device to break down at voltages below those necessary for operation. Specifically, a defect will cause an electrical short that prevents development of the necessary electrical field across the intrinsic region of the PIN diode. The larger the device the higher the probability of such a defect. Thus, If a defect occurs in the manufacture of a large monolithic device, the whole shutter is lost.

It has been suggested that this article or section be merged into Free-space optical communication#Visible light communication . Visible light is only a small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.Visible light communication (VLC) is a data communications medium using visible light between 400 THz (780 nm) and 800 THz (375 nm). Visible light is not injurious to vision.

An 8-beam free space optics laser link, rated for 1 Gbit/s at a distance of approximately 2 km. The receptor is the large disc in the middle, the transmitters the smaller ones. To the top and right side a monocular for assisting the alignment of the two heads.Free-space optical communication (FSO) is an optical communication technology that uses light propagating in free space to transmit data for telecommunications or computer networking. "Free space" means air, outer space, vacuum, or something similar.

Geneva, IL - S.I. Tech announces a new line of fiber optic transceivers which allow any copper Ethernet LAN to be switched to a fiber-to-the-desktop LAN. This is the only fiber optic transceiver line (Bit-Driver?), in the marketplace today that can handle any application within the Ethernet family. The product line consists of four Ethernet-to-fiber transceivers, a 24 X 24 transmissive star (Fiber Cluster?), an Ethernet fiber optic Bit-Driver? interface card, and an optical repeater mini Bit-Driver.

A dark fiber or unlit fiber is an unused Optical fiber, available for use in fiber-optic communication. The term dark fiber was originally used when referring to the potential network capacity of telecommunication infrastructure, but now also refers to the increasingly common practice of leasing fiber optic cables from a network service provider.

Preventing fiber damage. As all fibers that terminate in a given APOP are getting close to that location, the number of fibers per meter increases. The main cause of damage to buried fibers is a (sub-) contractor hired for another type of work, for instance on water pipes, who starts to dig with a machine without the mandatory check of the cable plans. A small number of broken fibers can be repaired quite quickly, but it obviously gets difficult as the number increases. A number of precautions were taken to prevent that from happening.
