How to Run Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cable is basically glass surrounded by a protective coating. Light is then sent down the wire and bounces along the inside of the glass. This allows for a greater transmission of information than copper cable.

Because the cables are made of glass, they can crack and break very easily, which means they need to be handled with care. Cracked or broken cable cannot transmit signals.Measure the distance along which you want to lay out the fiber optic cable.Pull the cable off the spindle. If you need to run a lot of wire, lay it out in a figure eight to avoid twisting.Cut the wire to the length you need. Strip the outer coatings with a knife; there should be two layers. Then make a nick in the glass and break it by hand. When you lay the wire, be aware of the minimum bending radius. Fiber optic cable cannot bend more than a certain amount. Look for a specification printed along the wire. There are different types of cable and each has a different bending radius.
