In telecommunications, insertion loss is the loss of signal power resulting from the insertion of a device in a transmission line or optical fiber and is usually expressed in dBs. Insertion los(IL) is a measure of attenuation,  but is a more precisely defined term. For instance, attenuation can include loss due to the source and load impedances not matching, but is not included in insertion loss since this is a loss that was already present before the "insertion" was made.

(NYSE:CALX) says that North Florida Broadband Authority (NFBA) will use part of the $39.3 million in broadband stimulus funds, including a $30.1 million grant and in-kind matches of $9.2 million, it received from the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) to buy Calix B6 Ethernet Service Access Nodes (ESANs) for a network that will serve 14 rural Florida counties and several cities in the region.
