Zayo packs its acquisition of Arialink

Zayo Group has put the final touches on its acquisition of Michigan-based Arialink, adding 930 new route miles to its overall network, including 400 miles of dense metro networks in Lansing and Ann Arbor, Mich.

A key point of the Michigan network is that it bolsters Zayo's on-net building fiber presence in the state. Over the network, it will provide its suite of Ethernet, dark fiber, and optical transport services to a 437 on-net building footprint. In addition, the service provider gains a regional long haul network that will allow it to provide connectivity to secondary markets in central Michigan.

Dan Caruso, president and CEO of Zayo Group, said the acquisition has a number of benefits. In addition to complementing its own national footprint, it "will expand the reach of our network services to new markets in Michigan that will be valuable to Zayo's current customers as well as enable national services for customers in Michigan."

One of the side benefits of the network is that it will extend middle-mile services to a number of area health-care facilities and communities that have had little if any broadband service. Prior to the acquisition, Arialink began building 190-mile network to interconnect major healthcare facilities as part of an FCC grant to the Michigan Public Health Institute.

Separately, Arialink's residential business has been purchased by the former owners of Arialink and will operate under the name Spectrum.
