A new, multi-million dollar fiber optic data system linking hospitals, schools and colleges, police and other public entities was launched on Monday.
Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence served as the showcase for the unveiling of the $32.4 million Beacon 2.0 system, with fiber optics linking the RWMC campus on Chalkstone Boulevard with its campuses at St. Joseph Hospital and Fatima Hospital in North Providence.
The high tech system was built by Cox Communications and is operated by a consortium of non-profit organizations called OSHEAN, Inc., short for Ocean State Higher Education Economic Development and Administrative Network. Of that total, $21.7 million came from federal grants.
