Fujitsu has developed what it claims is the world's first commercial 10Gigabit/sec Small Form Factor Pluggable (XFP)-type optical transceiver for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing.

Fujitsu has developed what it claims is the world's first commercial 10Gigabit/sec Small Form Factor Pluggable (XFP)-type optical transceiver for Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).

The transceiver will make it possible to develop and manufacture smaller, less expensive, high-speed DWDM optical transmission equipment when it becomes available at the end of March this year.

It supports both SONET and similar communications equipment (operating at 9.95 Gbit/sec) and 10 Git/sec Ethernet data communications equipment (operating at 10.3 Gbit/sec).

By incorporating a low-power optical device and an efficient heat dissipating mechanism, Fujitsu says that the new transceiver consumes roughly 40% less power compared to conventional DWDM transceivers (4W or less).

With an optical interface that allows hot-swapping, the new unit is easy to swap with existing XFP transceivers.
