BT rolls out fibre broadband to more Kent homes

Tens of thousands of properties across Kent are set to benefit from BT's national rollout of super-fast broadband.

The telecoms giant's fibre optic broadband service has gone live in a further 14 Kent communities - Archers Court, Gillingham, Barming, Deal, Hythe, Loose, Ramsgate, Thanet, Maidstone, Medway, Minster Sheppey, Rainham, Strood and Dover.

When BT engineers complete the local upgrades in the coming weeks, around 200,000 homes and businesses in the county will have been hooked up to the technology.

By spring 2013, the number of Kent properties with access to fibre broadband will exceed half a million as a result of this new investment.

John Weaver, BT's south-east regional director, said: "Fibre broadband will offer local firms and households new ways of working flexibly and allow large data and video files to be sent and received almost instantly."

The announcement comes a matter of weeks after BT unveiled plans to increase the coverage of its next-generation copper broadband service to another 33,000 premises across Kent.
