BSkyB serves up new 40 Mbps broadband service & supplies free WiFi

BSkyB, a UK-based competitive broadband service provider, introduced its new "Unlimited Fibre" broadband package, enabling users to get up to 40 Mbps speeds.

Leveraging BT Openreach's (NYSE: BT) Fiber to the Cabinet (FTTC) network, new and existing customers that want to purchase the higher speed service package will have to bundle its Sky Talk for either £1 ($1.60) or £5 ($8) a month and Sky Line Rental for £12.25 ($20).

BT separately announced this week an 80 Mbps FTTC service that it will offer to BT Retail and competitors like BSkyB.

Complementing the new broadband speeds will be WiFi service. The service provider will now allow any of its broadband subscribers, including Sky Broadband Unlimited, Sky Fibre Unlimited and Sky Connect customers, to get free access to the WiFi hotspots it provides via its subsidiary The Cloud.

WiFi has been a growing service for BSkyB with about four million users accessing the service on a daily basis. To keep up with WiFi demand it added over 4,000 hot spots to its network since the beginning of 2012.
