Semtech offers long-haul 40-Gbps DQPSK modulator drivers

Semtech Corp. (Nasdaq: SMTC) has announced the availability of its SMI2030 40-Gbps DQPSK modulator laser driver. The SMI2030 DQPSK modulator driver is the first in what Semtech promises will be a line of modulator drivers that will include devices for the 100-Gbps long-haul market -- as well as the first 400-Gbps-capable offerings.

The SMI2030 is a single-channel, three-stage, 28-Gbps lithium niobate optical modulator driver. It features low jitter, 7.5-V amplitude, and “excellent gain and group delay flatness,” Semtech asserts. Its surface mount technology (SMT) package enables integration in small form-factor (SFF) transponders. The SMI2030 driver also has sufficient gain and power to drive either 40-Gbps electro-absorption or lithium niobate modulators, Semtech says.

“The SMI2030 enables Semtech to offer a complete transmit solution, including both modulator drivers and matched multiplexers, with significant performance and cost advantages for our customer base,” said Sameer Vuyyuru, vice president and general manager for Semtech’s Transport and Data Communication Group. “With the ability to accurately control the output of the modulator drivers with our multiplexers, we offer perfectly tuned chipsets for the longest reach and bandwidth utilization.”
