OneCommunity deploys Fujitsu packet optical networking platforms

OneCommunity, a Northeast Ohio non-profit organization focused on broadband access and adoption, has deployed the Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet Optical Networking Platform (ONP) and FLASHWAVE 7120 Micro Packet Optical Networking platform as part of a $70 million optical network project. The project, which leverages $44.8 million in broadband stimulus money, includes a 1,000-mile-long open access fiber-optic network designed to extend high-bandwidth connectivity to 24 counties in Northern Ohio.

The OneCommunity network project, entitled “Transforming Northeast Ohio: From Rust Belt to Tech Powerhouse,” aims to provide anchor institutions such as education and government facilities with improved broadband access to provide such advanced services as telemedicine. As an open access network, the region’s carriers, cable operators, and private networks will be able to use the network at what Fujitsu called “extremely competitive rates and terms.”

“This project will have a significant impact on the region’s opportunities for economic development and quality-of-life standards,” said Scot Rourke, president and CEO, OneCommunity. “We chose to work with Fujitsu Network Communications because they demonstrated not only technology leadership, but also a commitment to our vision. Fujitsu technology will be benefitting Northern Ohio for decades to come.”

The Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 9500 Packet ONP will perform metro transport and aggregation functions while enabling migration to a single, universal optical infrastructure. The smaller Fujitsu FLASHWAVE 7120 will be used to extend the reach of the network to areas that don’t require the horsepower of the 9500. It combines multiplexing, amplification, signal conditioning, and performance monitoring to deliver managed services and wavelengths at the network edge.
