Pacific Crossing repairs transpacific cable, restores PC-1 West route

Pacific Crossing, a wholly owned subsidiary of NTT Communications Corp. and operator of the PC-1 transpacific submarine cable system, has repaired the PC-1 West route, which links Ajigaura and Shima, Japan, and suffered damage during the East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The North and West routes of PC-1 were damaged. The North route to the United States was restored and upgraded on May 26. With the West route repair completed, PC-1’s entire cable system has been restored.

Pacific Crossing is experiencing exponential demand for bandwidth on the PC-1 cable system, according to a representative. Pacific Crossing previously upgraded system capacity to 1.8Tbps on the transpacific route when restoring service on the PC-1 North route.

“Pacific Crossing has fully recovered its service on the PC-1 cable system from the East Japan earthquake damage on March 11,” notes Mr. Takahiro Sumimoto, chief executive officer of Pacific Crossing. “The quality of service has returned to its high pre-earthquake level. With this full recovery of the PC-1 cable system, we will continue enhancing our service offerings.”
