CenturyLink snaps up Networx Universal data services task order from Social Security Administration

CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL) has snapped up a $233 million, five-year task order to provide managed data services to the Social Security Administration via its seat on the General Service Administration's (GSA) Networx Universal contract.

Under the terms of the agreement, the telco will provide a network foundation to the support a host of data, video, and voice services for the global agency, in addition to providing a transition path from its existing service providers to its network platform.

It will take responsibility to serve all of SSA's data centers, regional offices, program service centers, remote operations communications centers and over 1,500 field office locations. The service provider will also provide management and implementation support and lifecycle engineering.

CenturyLink immediately established a top position on the Networx contract after acquiring Qwest last year. Since 2008, the former Qwest had been providing voice and video conferencing capabilities under the Networx Universal contract.

Despite the well documented delays federal agencies have had in awarding Networx task orders, SSA has been leading the charge for awards. In 2010, it awarded AT&T (NYSE: T) a $286 million contract for Citizens Access Routing Enterprise (CARE) through 2020 contact call center solution.
