Berk-Tek Launches PoE Plus Cabling System for Extended Distances

Berk-Tek, a Nexans Company, a copper and fiber optic cable technology and solutions leader, announces the offering a PoE Plus (IEEE 802.3 at) version of the OneReach™ system -- an integrated power and data cable solution for extended distances, such as for security cameras or access points, further than the 100 meters of UTP.  PoE Plus allows 34.20W of power from the power injector (source equipment), which can deliver up to 25.5W of power at the device end. “PoE Plus capability is built into the power injector unit which expands the range of devices that can be PoE-powered, to include multi-channel wireless access points and IP cameras with heaters and PTZ controls,” notes Mike Connaughton, RCDD, Fiber Optic Products Business Manager at Berk-Tek.

The OneReach system is comprised of three components –  power injector (PI) module, OneReach cable assembly (OCA) and remote PoE port (RPP).  The PI, located in the Telecommunications Room (TR), delivers both the power and the data from the active equipment. The OCA consists of the Berk-Tek indoor/outdoor CL3R-OF-rated composite copper/fiber cable, under one jacket, which includes 12 AWG or 18 AWG stranded conductors coupled with either tight-buffered or loose tube optical fibers.  The cable assembly is built to specific lengths and is pre-tested and pre-terminated with M8 connectors for the RPP.   The RPP is a media converter and PoE injector that converts the optical signal to an electrical signal.  From the RPP an additional 300 feet of twisted pair cable with a direct attach RJ-45 (Category 5e or 6) plug can increase the distance out to the powered device.

“The original version of the OneReach system, which was introduced in 2010 with PoE (IEEE 802.3af ) capability, provides up to 12.95W to devices at distances more than 100 meters from the TR and eliminates ac power, typically required for media converters when employing fiber.  The new PoE-Plus injector option doubles the electrical power out to 2,500 feet to the RPP or up to 2,800 feet with the direct attach at the device end,” states Connaughton.  “Additional benefits include a lower cost and better return on investment compared to installing local power at the device end or pulling separate cables in separate pathways, while also providing network advantages such as consolidated UPS and single point troubleshooting,” he adds.

The OneReach with PoE Plus capability is available immediately from major Berk-Tek distribution channels.
