AT&T costs $375 million to improve network services in San Antonio

During 2011, AT&T made nearly 400 wireless network upgrades in San Antonio focusing on four key categories, the company announced.

These enhancements include:

• Activating more than 10 new cell sites or towers to improve network coverage.

• Deploying faster fiber-optic connections to more than 325 cell sites.

• Adding approximately 50 extra layers of capacity to cell sites, which AT&T equates to adding lanes to a highway.

• Upgrading 10 cell sites to provide faster mobile Internet speeds.

In addition, AT&T launched its 4G LTE service in the San Antonio area on Sept. 19, 2011.

Overall, AT&T invested more than $375 million in its San Antonio area wireless and wireline networks from 2009 through 2011.

“Our goal is to deliver a network experience that mobilizes everything for customers,” says Chris Penrose, vice president and general manager of AT&T South Texas. “The ongoing investment we’re making in San Antonio is designed to increase coverage and reliability, and to provide advanced services to our customers.”

Dallas-based AT&T (NYSE: T) operates one of the nation’s largest Wi-Fi networks with nearly 30,000 AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 225,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements.
