Network Tasman yesterday signed an agreement with the Crown to extend its fibre network in the region.
The contract is part of the final phase of the Government's Rural Broadband Initiative.
This is intended to bring faster broadband and better connectivity to rural communities.
Network Tasman will extend its fibre optic network to schools and to public libraries.
Places being targeted include Picton, along with Wakefield, Mapua and Motueka in the Nelson/Tasman district.
Work will begin in the next few weeks and is expected to be completed by the middle of August.
Network Tasman operates the largest independent regional fibre network in New Zealand.
It has installed more than 400 kilometres of fibre optic cable since 2004 and now provides very high-speed broadband connectivity to a regional area from Motueka to Richmond and Nelson through to Blenheim, Picton and Waikawa.
In 2005 the company sponsored the development of the Loop education network.
This provides schools in the region with broadband communications at a higher speed and capacity than most businesses enjoy.
