Prime Minister Julia Gillard and federal Communications Minister Stephen Conroy announced stage one of the large-scale roll out last week.
Over the next three years, fibre optic components of the NBN will be rolled out to 3.5 million premises including homes, hospitals, schools, universities and businesses, across Australia.
By 2015, more than one million NSW homes and businesses will be hooked up.
Service provider NBN Co is set to begin work in Liverpool, including digging up existing copper wiring and installation of new high speed fibre optic cables in June 2013.
Work is on track to be finished by 2014.
They expect work to commence in Casula and surrounding areas by 2013 while services are already available in Moorebank.
Ms Gillard said the high-speed network was vital.
“I do not want to see our nation left behind, I do not want to see nations around the world have the benefits of a broadband network while Australia falls behind,” Ms Gillard said.
NBN Co chief executive Mike Quigley said the staged roll out was to keep disruption and traffic congestion to a minimum.
