How to Clean Fiber Optic Cable

Fiber optic cables are used in a variety of electronic devices, including computers and telephone systems. Many people take these cables for granted and never think about caring for them. However, fiber optic cables must be cleaned just like all other electronic equipment to continue functioning properly.

If the cable and the connectors are not cleaned regularly, microscopic dust, hair particles and skin oil will accumulate and cause the cable to malfunction.Unplug the fiber optic cable from the electronic device it is plugged into and the wall outlet, if possible.Hold the connector end of the cable that you just unplugged and spray it thoroughly with canned air that is formulated for fiber optics.Pick up a lint-free swab made specifically for cleaning fiber optics. Hold the end of the fiber optic cable in one hand and gently insert the swab tip into the cable until you feel resistance. Rotate the swab one complete turn and pull it away from the fiber optic cable.Fold a piece of lens paper in half and apply 1 tsp. of isopropyl alcohol. Wrap the lens paper around the actual cord of the fiber optic cable and move it along the entire length of the cable to remove dirt, oil and debris from the outside of the cable.Plug the fiber optic cable back into the electrical device and wall outlet, if applicable, making sure not to touch the end of the cable with your fingers.
