UPC Austria claims 1.3 Gbps over hybrid fiber/coax network

UPC Austria says it has achieved Internet service speeds as high as 1.3 Gbps in field trials over hybrid fiber/coax network. The trials were designed to test the cable operator’s “UPC Fiber Power” offering.

ARRIS Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: ARRS) supplied the equipment for the trial and helped set up the demonstration. While UPC Austrial did not reveal the equipment used in the field trial, ARRIS has demonstrated download speeds as high as 4.5 Gbps using its C4 CMTS.

UPC Austria says it doesn’t have immediate plans to offer such speeds. “Not only modems, but also devices such as laptops and wireless network elements are not yet ready today for such high bandwidths,” it stated in a press release. However, the company does plan to offer download speeds up to 100 Mbps.
