Founded in 1996, the company provides high-speed internet, digital and cable television and telephone service, mostly in Vancouver's Yaletown, Coal Harbour and downtown neighbourhoods.
For the average consumer, Novus compares in pricing and services to its competitor, Shaw Communications, who dominate the cable market in Vancouver. Some differences are that Shaw's TV bundle includes only 21 channels, while the equivalent Novus cable package contains 33 channels.
In 2009, Shaw started offering its services including phone and high-speed Internet to current Novus customers for a cheaper price, an offer which is not available to Shaw customers outside of the Novus service area. Novus has challenged Shaw Communications at the Competition Bureau and in the BC Supreme Court over allegations that this is an attempt by Shaw to eliminate its competition, which would allow Shaw to maintain its near monopoly status.
